Chamber to help Goodwill of Southern Nevada collect gently used items, more
HENDERSON, Nev. – With springtime comes spring cleaning for many, and the beginning of March is as good a time as any to be out with the old and in with the new. The Henderson Chamber of Commerce will host a week of giving from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, March 4, through Friday, March 8, to benefit Goodwill of Southern Nevada as one of its 2013 Community Events.
Throughout the week, the Henderson Chamber will collect gently used items that will be resold in Goodwill Retail Stores & Donation Centers to support Goodwill’s job training and placement program, Career Connections. Career Connections has two centers in Nevada that provide a multitude of free job seeker and employer services. In 2012, Career Connections placed more than 1,700 Clark County residents into jobs.
Specifically, Goodwill is seeking donations of gently used suits, clothing, books and household or business items, including furniture. Additionally, Goodwill has an ongoing partnership with Dell, so donations of computers, laptops or related equipment are also appreciated. A Goodwill donation trailer will be parked in the chamber parking lot all week to collect the items. In 2012 Goodwill kept 14 million pounds of gently used items out of landfills; this donation event will help that number grow for 2013.
As a bonus, every donor who donates at the Henderson Chamber site will receive a $5 coupon that they can use at the Green Valley Goodwill Retail Store & Donation Center located at Warm Springs and Stephanie.
“Our goals with this week long event are: to collect donations for Goodwill, raise awareness of all Goodwill does to benefit our community, and educate businesses on how they can host donation sites on their own properties,” said Scott Muelrath, president and CEO of the Henderson Chamber. “Goodwill does so much for Southern Nevada; we are looking forward to helping them in their efforts.”
Henderson Chamber Board members will be onsite Thursday, March 7, to give and help collect donations.
Also on March 7, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Goodwill’s business services specialist, as well as members of its community affairs team, will be onsite and available to talk to people about partnership opportunities and what services Goodwill can offer local businesses. Additionally, all donors will be entered into a raffle to win gift cards to several local Henderson restaurants.
The chamber hosts two to three such community events annually as part of a long-term effort to help the community. Its first event, on Oct. 19, benefited the Magical Forest. The events focus on member non-profits that serve the Henderson community.
The Henderson Chamber of Commerce is a nonprofit, voluntary organization committed to promoting and supporting member businesses.
